SCHOOLS EXCESS LIABILITY FUND (S.E.L.F.)

SELF is a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) that was created in 1986 in response to a hardening excess liability. Today the membership of SELF accounts for 85% of California school districts and 77% of the student population.

In 1996, the SELF-Board approved the offering of group term life and AD&D benefits to its members. The decision to offer this coverage was in response to member requests for assistance and relief in employee benefit costs. Since introduction of the program, SELF-members have saved more than 1 million dollars in annual benefit costs. In addition to cost savings, the SELF-group life program includes a refund agreement, which may result in a return of profit back to participating districts. Today, as the program continues to grow, we have expanded the portfolio to include medical stop loss for those larger self-funded school districts.
